{"id":155,"date":"2012-01-29T20:36:05","date_gmt":"2012-01-30T04:36:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.philshackleton.com\/site\/?page_id=155"},"modified":"2023-08-21T21:05:09","modified_gmt":"2023-08-22T04:05:09","slug":"about-me","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.philshackleton.com\/site\/about-me\/","title":{"rendered":"About Me"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.philshackleton.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Phil-Shackleton-head-shot-cropped.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-194\" title=\"Phil Shackleton head shot cropped\" src=\"http:\/\/www.philshackleton.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Phil-Shackleton-head-shot-cropped.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"243\" height=\"312\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.philshackleton.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Phil-Shackleton-head-shot-cropped.jpg 405w, https:\/\/www.philshackleton.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/Phil-Shackleton-head-shot-cropped-233x300.jpg 233w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 243px) 100vw, 243px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the beginning I was composer. \u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.philshackleton.com\/site\/recent-compositions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">I still am<\/a>, of course.) \u00a0Then I started <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philshackleton.com\/site\/arrangingproduction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">arranging<\/a>. \u00a0I began mixing out of self-defense, and found myself getting called just to engineer. \u00a0Occasional producing was a natural step. \u00a0Somewhere along the way, I discovered I had an affinity for music technology that was useful to other musicians, so I hung out my shingle as a music technology consultant. \u00a0I wrote some books for Alexander Publications and magazine articles for Keyboard and EQ. \u00a0I wrote some software manuals and tutorials (Logic Pro) both for software companies and third party publishers. \u00a0I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philshackleton.com\/site\/consulting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">helped some pretty great musicians figure out their rigs<\/a>, and taught them how to wring out the best from their MIDI\/audio gear and software.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way I&#8217;ve arranged <a href=\"http:\/\/operatheaterink.com\/2011\/05\/23\/review-citrus-singers-2011-haugh-performing-arts-center-may-23-2011\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">about a zillion hours of music for live performance<\/a>\u00a0in every imaginable style (much of it with orchestra or big band accompaniment, though I&#8217;ve done it all from hip hop to country to screaming rock). \u00a0Writing that much for live performance means I know how to get it to sound pretty good before it&#8217;s really mixed&#8230; which means when I compose or arrange for recording, it usually mixes very easily.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm3483305\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">composed for film<\/a>, a little bit, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0084472\/?ref_=nm_flmg_t_125_com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">orchestrated<\/a> for other composers, and consulted on technology for others.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve arranged a dozen or more children&#8217;s musicals, in many styles, all involving big band\/orchestral\/rock\/jazz\/hip hop\/latin\/gospel arranging and production. \u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ericrainwater.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philshackleton.com\/site\/publications\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published<\/a>\u00a0original choral music, technical manuals, and lots of musical arrangements in many styles, both choral and instrumental, with Shawnee Press, Lorentz Publishing, Ars Nova Press, Alexander Publications, Fred Bock Publishing, Rainwater Music, The Benson Company and Word.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way, I&#8217;ve been <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apu.edu\/music\/faculty\/pshackleton\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">teaching other people how to do this stuff<\/a>. \u00a0For some reason, that has never gotten boring. \u00a0Whether it&#8217;s consulting with great jazz musicians and publishing companies, presenting a class in a university, or giving workshops\u00a0to university faculty in how to use technology to teach music, it&#8217;s all about communication in the end&#8230; \u00a0which is a great deal of what music is all about, and what it takes to make music.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve taught music faculty at several colleges and universities how to use technology like Logic Pro to teach music theory and composition, as well as\u00a0general\u00a0music technology and recording arts. \u00a0Apple Computer Co selected me as an <strong>Apple Distinguished Educator<\/strong> in 2005. \u00a0But, of course, they&#8217;d never heard me sing.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re lucky, you won&#8217;t either.<\/p>\n<p>You can listen to some of my music <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philshackleton.com\/site\/listen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.
