It features Gino Munoz on flugel\/trumpet, and Amy Rowe on piano.\u00a0 An interesting aspect of this one&#8230;\u00a0 it has a couple of French Horns added to the typical big band, a request of the ensemble director, David Beatty.\u00a0 The title reflects the fact that I put all my favorite jazz ballad stuff into this one&#8230;\u00a0 so it&#8217;s probably harmonically denser than is the norm, but I admit that it was like cooking my favorite meal, and then eating it.<\/p>\n<h4>Transformations for Wind Ensemble<\/h4>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-299-8\" preload=\"none\" is a bit of an oldy.\u00a0 It was the mid 1980s.\u00a0 There weren&#8217;t really good sampling systems around, and no notation software that was worth the trouble.\u00a0 The commission was to write an arrangement of Praise to the Lord, the Almighty for piano and orchestra, while trying to suggest a bit of a Prokofiev vibe, for use as introductory music to a Haven of Rest radio program.\u00a0 This was all written on score paper in pencil.\u00a0 I passed it off and had nothing to do with the production process itself.\u00a0 The piano still sounds pretty good, because it&#8217;s a real piano.\u00a0 The synth sounds are dated&#8230;\u00a0 but you might appreciate the arrangement, anyway.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t sequenced.\u00a0 The pianist literally played all this wild to 24 track analog tape, a track at a time.\u00a0 And mixed.\u00a0 Given the limitations of the day, he did a brilliant job.\u00a0 (If I can get his permission, I&#8217;ll put his name here later.)<\/p>\n<h4>Leaning On The Everlasting Arms<\/h4>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-299-17\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.philshackleton.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/LeaningON.mp3?_=17\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.philshackleton.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/LeaningON.mp3\">http:\/\/www.philshackleton.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/LeaningON.mp3<\/a><\/audio>\n<p>For solo piano and violin, and full orchestra (even though this has a jazz flavor, all the notes are written in the solo parts&#8230;. \u00a0which doesn&#8217;t stop an enterprising performer from coloring outside the lines a bit). \u00a0This performance features Duane Funderburk on piano and Alex Russell on violin. \u00a0The orchestra parts are of only moderate difficulty, since the performers used this on tours where they had minimal rehearsal time with the local orchestras with which they performed.<\/p>\n<h4>Lord, I Want To Be A Christian<\/h4>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-299-18\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/www.philshackleton.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Lord-I-Want-To-Be-A-Christian-mix2.mp3?_=18\" \/><a happens when a producer for a huge stage show with a cast of zillions tells the arranger to write a Finale that goes through about 12 feel changes (not to mention three set changes) and fits ten songs and a dance break into less than 7 minutes? \u00a0Well&#8230;. \u00a0 this.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not too far over the top&#8230;\u00a0 or not much, anyway.\u00a0 This show ran for about a year in Anaheim, CA, just down the street from Disneyland, at the appropriately named Tinseltown Theater.\u00a0 This is from the cast album.<\/p>\n<h4>Sunrise, Sunset<\/h4>\n<audio class=\"wp-audio-shortcode\" id=\"audio-299-20\" preload=\"none\" style=\"width: 100%;\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"audio\/mpeg\" trying to decide if I think this one is advanced elevator music, or if it&#8217;s just a nice, warm arrangement of a standard.
